ASA of PA 45 & Over State Championship - State College
(Written by Tom Schadt) - Vector Security (Dist. #11) lost to Bobtown
10-9 on Sat. in the double-elimination portion of the ASA of Pa 45+ State
Tournament held in State College on Aug. 7,8 2004. However, Vector won their
next 7 games to win the state title for the second year in a row. In 2003
Vector Security went 6-0 to win the title. Jerry's Service Center/Gallerie &
Son from Scranton was second. Jerry's won the 2004 50+ Class AAA/AA State
Title in July in Linfield. TNT from Norristown was third and Strabane
S.N.P.J.(from western Pa) was 4th. Vector Security scored a total of 206
runs (20.6 runs per game) and gave up only 60 runs (6.0 runs per game. All
12 teams began Sat. by playing 2 pool games, followed by double-elimination.
The tournament was set up by Dean Amick, ASA President, Dist. # 8
Commissioner and chairman of the ASA of PA Master's/Seniors Committee. Jann
Duck ran the tournament in State College for the two days. Roy Harpster was
the umpire assigner. Teams from the 45+ league in State College were in
charge of field maintainence. After rain on Friday evening they had the
fields ready at 8:00 am Sat. morning. The field was dragged and lined off
for the championship game. All teams that participated may play in the ASA
45+ National Tournament to be held in Hayward, California on Sept. 10,11,12.

Tournament held in Linfield, Pa. KClinger's beat Spring-Ford AA 55+ Red by a score of 19-9
in the "if" game. KClinger's beat Spring-Ford AA 55+ Red 8-6 to force the "if" game.
KClinger's had to come from the loser's bracket and play 4 straight games to become
champions. In addition to batting and field well they also played with a lot of class. Third
place was TNT from Norristown and fourth place was Spring-Ford AA 55+ White. Charles
Granese, ASA District #14 Commissioner, was the Tournament Director and was present for
all the games. Umpire assigner was Robert Christman. Tom Schadt did the Manager's
Handbook and the fields.

Congrats to the Bridgeport Pizza crew of the Norristown "A" Division, they
continued their undefeated season as they went through the ASA Montgomery
County Class-C Championships without a loss. Co-Managers Craig Balmer and
Matt O'Hara orchestrated a good lineup and led by the hot bat of Mike
Kaufman won going away. Cannon Roofing of Norristown came in second as
they played short-handed all day as did most of the teams in this
qualifier. Good luck to all the these teams up in York for the ASA Class-C
State Championships on the weekend of July 24-25th.

Congrats to Manager Mike Brinkman of the Trappe Tavern Red team for claiming
this year's Montgomery County ASA Class-D Championship. The Collegeville boys
proved that they belong in this tournament as they played fine defense and did
not panic after Maro & Maro forced the "if" game. Bobby Keyser, Brian Fields,
Don Yeager and the rest of this fine squad earned a trip right to the state
finals. I'd like to especially congratulate Mike Brinkman who has been around
for a long time now and has always fielded good teams in Collegeville. He's a
good guy and deserves this District Championship. Heels Gelet said that Steve
Shoemacher of Maro & Maro was the ouststanding player of the tournament as he
reminded Gelet of a 'young' Clarke Farrell.

ASA 40 & Over State Championship, Norristown, PA
Despite on and off rain on Sat. June 5 the ASA of Pa 40+ Masters State
Tournament was played. AIA of Harrisburg/Enola beat TNT Sports Club of
Norristown in the final game by a 11-10 score. AIA went 4-0, while TNT was 4-2.
TNT beat Vector Security, 13-12 to give Vector Security 3rd place with a 2-2
record. The most thrilling game of the tournament was a TNT win over Big Dog by
a 26-15 score in 8 innings. TNT was down big early in the game, but score 11
runs in the 8th inning. Sonny Termine's TNT team did Norristown softball proud
!! Diamond-tex and diamond-dry were used at Weirman Field to keep the field
playable during the rain. The last two games were moved to East Norriton because
the field was in better condition and the Weirman Field lights are not in proper
working order. Charlie Granese, ASA District #14 Commissioner, was the
tournament director and present all day. Sully Gelet was the assistant director
and in charge of East Norriton Field for all their games. Tom Schadt did the
manager's handbook and other paperwork and mailings. The Norristown umpires did
an excellent job all day. Looking forward to hosting the 40+ State Tournament
again in 2005 with more teams. Local Entry, TNT Sports Club sponsored by
Sonny Termine and Managed by Bobby Ray lost their first game to Big Dogs of
Pittsburgh 14-11 and then proceeded to real off four straight wins to make it
back to the championship game against AIA/Enola Sportsmen Club of the Harrisburg
Area. Reds Meara, Tom Coughlin (2 HRs) and Jeff Jaffe all had big games for TNT
against Big Dogs in the opening game losing effort. Once in the loser's
Bracket, TNT Sports Club backed by the three home run performance of Tom
Coughlin (5 for 5 in the game) defeated TNT-II by a 20-10 margin. Roger Kummerer,
Rob Wisner and Steve Dimitry all had 4 hits in the contest. They then defeated
Tom Schadt's Spring Ford-AA squad of Linfield 20-15 behind Steve Dimitry's 4 for
4 performance including a homer. Tom Coughlin also went 4 for 4. Dick Moody and
Tony Carfagno also had big games for the winners. Next up was a rematch against
the Big Dogs of Pittsburgh. Behind the hitting of Rob Wisner, Roger Kummerer,
Warren Grant and Tom Pagel, TNT exploded for 11 runs in the top of the 9th
inning to put the game away 26-15. This advanced the locals to the winner's
bracket against Vector Security of Mechanicsburg. TNT jumped out to a 11-1 lead
behind the home runs of Steve Dimitry, Warren Grant and Mike Woytovich, only to
hold on to a close 13-12 victory. Tom Coughlin continued his hot hitting by
going 4 for 4 again. Once in the championship game, the locals had to defeat AIA
twice to claim the crown. The smooth and grace of the AIA squad proved too
strong for the locals as they went down to a heart-breaking 11-10 defeat. TNT
Pitcher Rob Wisner was amazing on the mound as he thwarted one rally after
another with his incredible fielding display up the middle. Wisner was 16 for 22
(.727) for the weekend at the plate as well. Nobody's star shone brighter than
Tom Coughlin. The 2-time Norristown League MVP was 20-25 (.800) with 5 home
runs. Warren Grant was 16-25 (.640) with 3 home runs. Paul "Reds' Meara was
spectacular in his lead-off role setting the table time and time again for the
big boppers. Reds was 17-27 (.630). Steve Dimitry chipped in with a 13-20 (.650)
performance including 2 homer runs. The combination of Roger Kummerer and Tony
Carfagno were both 15-25 (.600). Tom Pagel was the team's defensive MVP as he
made one great grab after another in his left center position. Dickie Moody
(.565) had many 2-out run scoring hits and played a flawless second base for the
locals. Willy Plant batted .667 (4-6) in his pinch hitting roles. Other
team members included pinch-runner Jimmy Natalini, shortstop Danny Deterline and
coach Ernie Chintalan. TNT Sports Club will attend the 40 & Over National
Tournament in Valdosta, GA in August.
