Explanation:
The ASA of PA has seven (7) berths for the 2007 Class-C National
Championships. This year the berths will be determined differently than
they have in the past. The state used to hold six (6) Class-C National
Qualifiers with each winner being awarded a berth to the Class-C National
Championship and then the seventh spot went to the Class-C State
Championship winner. In 2007, the ASA of PA we’ll still have the regularly
scheduled National Qualifier events, only they will now be part of the new
system called the “C-State Slow Pitch Point Series Tournament Events”. They
will no longer be called National Qualifiers. There will only be one (1)
official ASA of PA National Qualifier and that will be held at Manetas
(Formerly Zinn’s) Park in Denver on June 16-17. The York Memorial Weekend
Tournament is a Central Atlantic Regional National Qualifier and therefore
teams outside of Pennsylvania from the Central Atlantic Region are eligible
to play and the winner is awarded a National berth, but that doesn’t count
towards Pennsylvania’s allotment of seven (7) total.
Teams will be awarded points determined by what place they finish in each
tournament. The Zinn’s National Qualifier will be a “double points” event
and the winner of this event will also be awarded an ASA Class-C National
Championship berth. In addition to these events, each District Commissioner
may run one (1) Class-C District Championship. This event must be approved
by the ASA of PA State Office and run by the District Commissioner or his
designee. The only rule for this District Championship to be an official
“C-State Slow Pitch Point Series Tournament Event” is that the tournament
MUST have at least four (4) teams participate to count in the standings.
This goes without saying, but any of these “C-State Slow Pitch Point Series
Tournament Events” also must have at least four (4) teams entered to count
in the standings. The District Commissioner is the sole person who can
determine whether a team in his district can participate in the Class-C
State Championship either by acknowledgement of their participation in any
of the “C-State Slow Pitch Point Series Tournament Events” or by declaring
them a legitimate Class-C team and sending them directly to the states as
such. Some Districts do not have enough teams to hold a district
championships and their commissioner can and may decide he wants his
team(s) to play in one of the other events or he may just let them go
directly to the States. In any of these cases, he has final say on all his
teams State participation. The District Commissioner also has final say on
how his District Championship is to be run, he can allow teams from other
districts to participate or he can make the tournament exclusive to just
his district teams only.
At the end of the tournament series events and prior to the Class-C State
Championships, the top two (2) teams in the final standings of the “C-State
Slow Pitch Point Series Tournament Events” will be awarded ASA Class-C
National Championship berths. The final point standings will also be used
to actually “seed” the Class-C teams in the State Championship bracket. And
finally, the top four (4) teams at the ASA of PA Class-C State
Championships will be awarded the remaining four (4) ASA Class-C National
Championship berths. That brings our final total to seven (7) berths as we
discussed earlier.
A point system has been set in place to award points to each and every team
that participates in these events. The points will be tracked on this web
site (http://www.norristownsoftball.com/2007ASA-C.html). It will be updated
after every tournament to keep track so each team can see where they stand.
Teams receive points for just participating and the point totals will be
kept close together to keep teams interested throughout the series. You can
actually not even win one (1) single tournament and still win the total
points. All of the approved “C-State Slow Pitch Point Series Tournament
Events” are listed below and they include the District Championship
Tournaments. All will count towards the final Point totals. These final
point totals will be used to seed the teams in the Class-C State
Championship Bracket. Each and every team that wins one of these events
must still participate in the ASA of PA Class-C State Championship to
validate their National Championship berth. The point totals are listed
below:

*** This is a Central Atlantic Regional
National Qualifier and the winner of this event will be awarded a National
Berth, but teams from the whole region can enter and only the Pennsylvania
teams will be awarded points in this event by the place they finish in. If
the highest ASA of PA team finishes in 3rd place, they will get third
place points, etc. Teams from outside the State get no points as this is
not a PA State National Qualifier and doesn’t count towards the seven (7)
berths ASA of PA is awarded to the Nationals.

The top 4 teams in the States
qualify for a National berth UNLESS any of these teams is the Zinn's
National Qualifier winner or the top 2 teams in the C-Point Series Final
Standings, in which case these teams have already secured a national berth
and this national berth spot would then pass down through the State
Championship final Standings. If it comes to do 2 teams tied for the spot,
then the team with the most points in the C-Points Series Final Standings
would get the berth as the tie-breaker. If the two teams tied for 5th have
the same amount of points, then we'll do the only fair thing and that's to
have a one game playoff at the State Championship to determine 5th place.
Another thing to keep in mind is that Vigilant of York also has a National
Berth (from the Central Atlantic Regional Qualifier event in York on
Memorial Day weekend). Actually, AIA/Enola won the event and declined to
accept the National berth and it passed down to the 2nd place team in that
event (Vigilant). So, if Vigilant finishes in the top-4 of the States, the
National berth would pass down to the next finisher also.

If your district does not have a District
Championship Scheduled, you must check with your District Commissioner to
see what he directs you to do. He reserves the right to make you play in (1)
one event or not. He can also choose to make this one event be played within
his own District boundaries. Also remember that each District Commissioner reserves the
right to make his District Championship exclusive to his district teams only
if he chooses to so do. It is his decision as a District Commissioner to
allow outside teams from his area or neighboring Districts in or not.
Tie-Breakers:
A) If teams end up in a tie in the Points Standings at the end of the
“C-State Slow Pitch Point Series Tournament Events”, the team that played in
the MOST events shall be awarded the berth or higher seed. The second tie
breaker is the team with the most wins.
B) If one of the Top four (4) teams in the Class-C State Finals also
finished in one of the top two (2) places in the Points Series standings or
won the National Qualifier and therefore have already secured a Class-C ASA
Eastern Nationals berth. The berth would then pass down through the ASA of
PA State Championship standings using the points of the “C-State Slow Pitch
Point Series Tournament Events” as tie-breakers.
Every Monday, any tournament director holding one of these events is
responsible to email or call in the results and they will posted along with
the current Point Standings on the official web page so you can see where
you stand with the rest of the teams. (Call Steve Dimitry 610-539-9297 or

The 2007 Slow Pitch Meeting will also
have some players from throughout the state who I feel are influential and
have an outstanding knowledge of Pennsylvania Slow Pitch Softball. I feel we
need the input from the players to make this whole thing work and as
Chairman of this Committee, I will ask the Commissioners to please listen to
the players suggestions and we can discuss them one at a time. I have been
in contact with some players throughout the state who have respect from
other players and commissioners alike. I will name them after the State
Championship play concludes.
