Finals
Players Club defeated Next Level

According to league president Tom Brady, this was the best game he has seen in a long time. The championship came down to the regular season champion Next Level (17-1 in the season) and the second place team, Players Club (the only team to beat Next Level during the season). The game went back and forth for the first few innings. Next Level pitcher Joe Termine was throwing his rainbow pitches and Players pitcher Mike Fiorentino was serving up his flat junk balls. Early home runs by Mike Harbaugh of the Players and Skitz DiFlore of Next Level kept the game close. The Players erupted for a couple big innings highlighted by a titanic shots off the bats of Robbie Himes and Justin Sabol. They took a 17-8 lead into the top of the 7th inning. The Players title celebration was put on temporary hold as Next Level showed the heart of a lion as they stormed back to score 13 runs to take a 21-17 lead. They must of had 15 straight line drives. Every single one of them came through in the clutch. The big blow was struck by Jake DiFlore. After an intentional walk to Skitz DiFlore, big brother Jake camly lined a single to center to give Next level the lead in an improbable comeback. I give a lot of credit to those guys for never giving up, they showed what they were made of (Brian Giamarco, Mike Collazzo, Brian Dunlap, Jamie Petaccio (Fat), Jake DiFlore, Skitz DiFlore, Joey Termine, Chris Catagnus (Tags), Rob Hires, Steve McAnney and Rich Wolf). Now it was up to the Players to either step up to the challenge or fold up go home. It looked bleak as the first 2 players made outs. Leadoff hitter and season long batting leader for the Players Mike Harbaugh hit a ground ball through the infield and hustled his way to a double to get things going. Steve Dimitry then lined a 2 strike single to center to score Harbaugh (score was now 21-18). Bill Gulotta (5 for 5 on the night) drilled a single to left. Speedy Dimitry was held at second by his screaming teammates. Robbie Himes walked for the third time of the game and up to the plate stepped Joe McFarlane (MVP). Earlier in the game, Himes was walked to load the bases and the move worked as Big Joe flied out to deep left. This time, the big guy didn't waste no time as he deposited the first pitch he saw over the fence for a walk off grand slam to complete an amazing comeback and give the Players the Bridgeport title in a thrilling 22-21 game. Big Joe showed why he was voted the MVP in the Rec division last year, his HR was as clutch as they come. Both teams showed a lot of class as they shook hands and talked after the game, each of them knowing that either of them could have won that game, it just came down to the last bat, the last swing. Congratulations to Manager Steve Cutler for organizing the squad and Mark Melice for sponsoring the team. Other teams members include Shortstop Harry Singleton, Second basemen Roger Kummerer (4 hits on the night) and Left Fielder Gene Iorio.

Calvin Butcher smacked a pair of home runs and finished with five hits and six RBI's as Clank's Bar outslugged Sungate Diner/Moon Plumbing, 22-18, for the championship. Butcher's second homer came in the bottom of the sixth innning, with Clank's holding a two run lead. Clank's had two runners on base with two outs, when Butcher slammed a 2-2 pitch well over the roof of the Alan McIlvain Lumber Yard in left-center field. The ball was estimated to have traveled over 400 ft. and was one of the longest home runs ever hit at Marcus Hook Memorial Field. Clank's, which received three hits from winning pitcher Rich Duranto, won the best-of-five series, 3-2. Mike Markiewicz added four hits as part of a 28 hit attack. Congratulations to both teams and their managers, Mike Stern (Clank's) and Matt Moore (Sungate Diner), for what was a very well played and entertaining five-game championship series. Good luck to both teams in the 20th Anniversary Daily Times/Exelon Champs 'n' Charity Classic, which starts one month from today on August 22nd. The Marcus Hook Slow Pitch League should be represented well by two teams who put on quite a show in the last couple of days.

Montco Senior Softball League

The Montgomery County Senior Softball League was established in March of 1999 and is going into the fifth season with four teams (Magics, Marshals, Marvels and Mavericks). The league is for male players 60 and over and female players 55 and over whose skills may have not kept pace with their enjoyment of the game.  The Amateur Softball Association (ASA) playing rules apply with modifications for senior players. Some of the rules have been softened to protect the players, such as no sliding into bases, no metal spikes and the use of two first base bags and two home plates to avoid collisions. Teams can’t score more than five runs per half inning. Each game is seven innings long and 11 players are on the field at one time.  Everyone plays and bats and the league does emphasize playing safe, having fun, getting exercise, having laughs, enjoying camaraderie, showing sportsmanship and winning in that order of importance. They don’t worry about dropping or misjudging fly balls, striking out, missing ground balls, making bad throws or having back to back senior moments. These fine people have done all these things in the past and will continue to do so. The games are scheduled every Tuesday and Thursday mornings at 9:30 and 11:00 from April 22nd through October 9th with some Friday night games in late August, September and October. During the season, each team has a 44 game schedule. They also have a travel team (Marauders – made up players from the four other teams) that play several neighboring county teams during the season and enjoy the camaraderie that develops from these games. The “away” schedule includes teams from Allentown (Berks County) and Chester County. The league field is located at School Road Park Softball Field in Hatfield Township, Montgomery County. The players from this league come from approximately within a 30 mile radius … such as Lansdale, North Wales, Souderton, Harleysville, Perkasie, Collegeville, Wyncote, Blue Bell, Glenside, Warminster, Doylestown, Philadelphia, Quakertown, Norristown, Lower Gwynedd, Audubon, Wayne, Lafayette Hill, Warrington, Chalfont, Phoenixville, Jamison, East Norriton, Sellersville, Schwenksville, Ambler, Maple Glen, Telford, Horsham, Ottsville, Jeffersonville, Pennsburg, Elkins Park and Willow. Membership contributions are $40.00 per person and this pays for the balls, bats, other equipment and insurance coverage.  Sponsorships are welcomed also. They even have a League Luncheon at the end of the season for the players and a Buffet Dinner & Dance for the players, spouses, friends in March and also in October. Vic Zoldy, 66 years old is the founder of this league. The league is coming along slowly, but definitely is growing every year. This year 46 players are signed up and 80% of them are under 70 years old. The oldest player is 79 years old. Scores of the games are kept, but there are not enough people to keep individual player stats. Most of the players are retired or have part-time jobs. If anyone is interested in joining the Montgomery County Senior Softball League. Please call Vic Zoldy at (215) 721-7782 or email him at VZONDY@AOL.COM.
