Region-12 History
In 1967, the ASA Open Slow Pitch Nationals had to be reduced in size. Upwards of 50-60 teams were starting to attend by the 1966 season. Instead of every State and Metro Association sending their champions straight to the National Tournament. These teams would now have to attend a Regional Tournament first and only that Regional Tournament Champ would be able to attend the National Tournament. This assured that the number of teams would always be around 32 teams. The ASA divided the country into 30 Regions, A team had to win it's Regional Championship to qualify for the National Championships.  These regions were comprised of states and metro cities.  Also invited to the nationals were the defending champ and the host team, which made up a field of 32 teams.  Prior to 1967, the nationals had upwards of 65 teams.  Usually the top 2 finishers in the respective state or metro championships went to the regionals to compete for the right to go to the nationals. These regionals were usually held in mid-August a couple weeks after their respective state and metro championships. Region-12 started out with just ASA of Pennsylvania, ASA of Delaware and ASA of Metro Pittsburgh. In 1970, they incorporated ASA of Metro Philadelphia from Region-8. In 1974, They incorporated ASA of West Virginia from Region-4 and lost ASA Metro Philadelphia and ASA Delaware to Region-7. In 1976, The ASA consolidated Region-7 into District 5/6 by adding ASA Maryland, ASA Metro Washington DC, ASA Delaware and ASA Metro Philadelphia. District 5/6 also added ASA Pennsylvania from Region-12. The Regions were renamed due to the loss of Region-7 and District-12,  now renamed District-11, contained only ASA Metro Pittsburgh and ASA West Virginia. In 1977, the ASA stared the Area Region system calling each region by location. They consolidated 30 regions into 15. It has remained pretty much the same up until the present with only difference being some Metro Associations being incorporated into it's own State Association.
